Dyaus and Prithvi

Dyaus and Prithvi are the term, which refers to the Heaven and the Earth. Dyaus and Prithvi seemed to have been very ancient Aryan divinities. They are described as the parents of the other gods in many passages of the Rig Veda. There are several hymns especially devoted to the honour of Dyaus and Prithvi. Heaven and Earth are characterised by a profusion of epithets in the hymns. These are suggested by their various physical characteristics like vast-ness, breadth, profundity, productiveness, unchangeableness and also by their moral or spiritual nature such as innocuous or beneficent, wise promoters of righteousness.

Dyaus and Prithvi are described as the universal parents and they are also spoken of in other places which they created. Therefore, in Rig Veda it is said that the one produced Dyaus and Prithvi must have been the most skilful artisan of all the gods. Lord Indra is also described as the creator of Dyaus and Prithvi. The origin of Dyaus and Prithvi has also many accounts in other passages. As per one such hymn, the sole creator of the Dyaus and Prithvi is ascribed to be the god Viswakarma. Again, another hymn confuses as the poet asks who is created first, the Dyaus or Prithvi?
