Dongri Fort, locally known as Irmitri Fort, is located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Also called Dongri Hill Fort, it is located in the Dongri area. The fort came under the Maratha Rule in 1739. Currently Dongri Fort is under the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Co-operation and there is a statue of Chimaji Rao Appa. Every year on the month of October, the feast of "Our Lady of Fatima" is celebrated there. Currently Dongri Fort is in ruins.
History of Dongri Fort
Dongri Fort or Dharavi Fort was built after the Vasai Fort, when the Portuguese realized the significance of the place. They built these forts at the time of conquering the Northern Konkan. It is believed that Chimaji Rao Appa came to Vasai and might have captured this fort. In May 1737, the new Viceroy Mr. Kaddin came to this place and after three days attacked Dongri Fort and defeated the Maratha rulers. Between May 1737 and March 1739, the Maratha rulers and the Portuguese were strong rivals and attacked each other several times. Then the fort again came under the control of Marathas in 1739.
Visiting Information to Dongri Fort
The best time to visit the Dongri Fort is the October month. Mumbai Central Railway Station and Mumbai Airport are the nearest to visit the fort. National Highway 48 connects Mumbai to other parts of India.
