Dharangaon

Dharangaon is a small city in Jalgaon district of Maharastra where the first cotton experiments were made.

Dharangaon is a city in Jalgaon district in the western state of India; Maharashtra. It is positioned 35 miles northeast of Dhulia and the nearest station is the Erandol road railway station. Dharangaon, Maharashtra is located between 21.02° North latitude and 75.27° East longitude and at a height of 213 metres (698 feet) above mean sea level.

History records that during the seventeenth century Dharangaon in Maharashtra was a trade center of considerable importance and was known by several names Dongaon, Dorongon, Drongom. It was one of the most flourishing places in the country.

According to the 2001 census report, Dharangaon in Maharashtrahad a population of 33,618 inhabitants. Males constitute 51% of the population and 49% of the population. In Dharangaon, 13% of the population is less than six years of age. Dharangaon has an average literacy rate of 66% which is higher than the national average literacy rate - 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 74% and the female literacy rate is 57%.

It was in Dharangaon of Maharashtra where the first cotton experiments were made. The main cotton and oilseeds trade is with Jalgaon, located 20 miles to the east of Dhargaon. Dharangaon is also famous for its handmade paper and cloth. It is a Municipal town and the municipal area is 1.85 sq. km. which was established in 1866 and is now under the Bombay District Municipal Act ,1901.

At present, Dharangaon has no water works. People fetch water from wells outside the tank situated near the Bibi Tank. Water from the Bibi Tank is used to water the roads. The town also has a public library which is named `Zumakaran Library`.

In the center of Dharangaon is a dargah which was built by Aurangzeb. There is also a Shiva Temple called Pataleshvar temple which was built 300 years ago.
