Deep Dasgupta is a former Indian cricket player, who has played for Bengal. Deep played in 8 tests and 5 ODIs from 2001 to 2006 as the national wicketkeeper; later he was replaced by Ajay Ratra. Deep became the captain of Bengal after Sourav Ganguly resigned from the place. He was also the reserve wicketkeeper of the East Zone behind the national wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Later he joined the renegade Indian Cricket League, where he played for the Royal Bengal Tigers. Deep Dasgupta is now a Hindi commentator.
Early Life of Deep Dasgupta
Deep Dasgupta was born in Kolkata, West Bengal on 7th June 1977 and brought up in Delhi. He studied at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in New Delhi. He kept on doing well as a wicket keeper and batsman in his school cricket team. Later he joined the Hindu College to complete his graduation.
Career of Deep Dasgupta
Deep Dasgupta started his career as an opening batsman - wicket keeper and got the focus immediately by scoring a century on debut in Ranji Trophy against Baroda. After that he was included in India`s squad to South Africa in 2001 and made his Test debut at Bloemfontein. Deep could not score a run in that match.
When England was touring India for a Test series in 2001 then Dasgupta was out against the first ball by hitting wicket. His debut series involves the Mike Denness incident and he was one of the six cricketers along with Sachin Tendulkar, Sehwag, Ganguly, Harbhajan Singh and Shiv Sunder Das who were banned by Denness for one Test. Tendulkar was banned for ball-tampering, Ganguly was banned for the inability to control the behaviour of his team. The rest, including Dasgupta, were suspended for excessive appealing.
Later Dasgupta continued with Bengal in Ranji trophy. He has been one of the successful captains of Bengal Ranji team, who is the only captain after Sambaran Banerjee to lead the team to two Ranji Trophy finals in consecutive seasons of 2006 and 2007. But both of the times they lost the match to Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai.
