Dashaavatar is an Indian comic book based on the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. It is published and distributed by Mumbai based Vimanika Comics. The comics will be launched in two separate volumes that will represent the various tales related to the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu, namely Matsya (the fish), Kurma (the tortoise),Varaha (the boar), Narasimha, (the humanoid lion), Vamana (the dwarf), Parashurama (the immortal with an axe), Rama (the Prince of Ayodha), Krishna (the dark coloured one) and his brother Balarama, Buddha (the enlightened one), Kalki (the destroyer of sins). The first issue has already been launched and was much admired by readers and comic enthusiasts.
The script has been constructed by Deepam Chatterjee, artwork and illustrations are by Sudhir Sehgal and Ratnagar Singh has worked on the colouring of the comics. Dashaavatar is published in a graphic novel format; the first issue will constitute 64 pages and 5000 published copies. Karan Vir Arora, founder and chief visualiser of Vimanika Comics launched Dashaavatar at the Crosswords book store in Mumbai, on 10th March, 2010.
Concept of Dashaavatar
According to Hindu mythology, the sole purpose of an avatar, a supreme consciousness embodied on earth, is to protect, uphold and revive Dharma and the sacred teachings. Lord Vishnu, the sustainer and governor of the universe, has incarnated in several forms through various Yugas (ages). Lord Vishnu has appeared on earth whenever Dharma has faced threats due to evil elements on earth and has protected and rescued mankind from the evil. The various incarnations have also protected the Holy Scriptures of ancient Indian civilisations. The Dashaavataars have revealed that spirituality and divinity reinstates righteousness, known as Dharma and eradicated injustice by manifesting on earth in various embodiments.
The first volume of Dashaavatar the Indian graphic novel will retell the stories of first 5 incarnations and the second volume will deal with the rest of the 5 avatars. The initial issue includes the divine tales of Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha and Vamana avatars. The first four avatars have appeared in the Satya Yuga, where as the fourth incarnation had manifested in the Treta Yuga. The stories are depicted through narrative panels, stylized artwork, digitally enhanced colours and high production values.
