Dadi Dorab Pudumjee, Indian Theatre PersonalityDadi Dorab Pudumjee is a puppeteer. He was born in Pune in 1951. Pudumjee studied at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. He received his early education in puppetry under Meher Contractor at Darpana Academy and formal training at the Marionette Theatre Institute, Stockholm. Increasingly interested in employing folk idioms, he founded the Sutradhar Puppet Theatre at Delhi`s Shri Ram Centre in 1980. he directed it till 1986. After this he set up his own company, Ishara, collaborating with traditional puppeteers, actors, dancers, and poets. Pudumjee has created puppets emphasizing motion, combining the grace of Indian marionettes with the energy of Western figures. His productions, often stressing improvisation and sometimes involving performers wearing masks, have won international acclaim. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1992.
