Children’s Literature in Tamil

Children`s Literature in Tamil is given adequate importance as juvenile readers demonstrate immense interest in imaginative creations, innovative things and ideas. At the present age, numerous books are published in Tamil language for children and kids. The young readers may not be interested or not learn anything new, if the content is presented in an unexciting and tedious manner. Their mind accepts only that knowledge which is provided to them in a fascinatingly simple way. In the last few years, several books in Tamil have been published in order to satisfy the curiosity and inquisitiveness of young readers and to improve their general knowledge. It is praiseworthy that most of the children`s books in Tamil literature are being composed with creativity and imagination. These are generally written in a style that can be easily understandable by the kids.

Some of the most well known Tamil authors who write stories and compile books for children are Vaittanna, Tampi Cinivacan, Teyvacikamani, Puvannan, Cuntaravativelu and T.J. Rankanatan. Some of the authors write horror and detective stories for children as well; even though it is argued that such stories are not suitable for them. Therefore such works are not usually considered as children`s books in Tamil literature. Various exciting and interesting stories, which have been popular amongst the Tamil people for generations, are simplified and re-written to cater to juveniles. Ala Valliyappa has accumulated and compiled fascinating tales from the lives of renowned and noble men in their youth and published these stories through 2 exciting books withy the titles Cinnan Ciruvayatil and Periyor Valvile. Both the books are written in a remarkable manner which is most suitable and appropriate for children.

It has become a practice to compose and construct children`s books in Tamil literature in a simple and lucid manner so that it can be easily understood by the kids in an amusing and exciting way. But currently, it has become a necessity even for adults to write in a logical and intelligible style without implementing archaic words and complex syntactical structure.

Nevertheless, there are no disagreements or second opinions that the theme and subject matter of a book, whether targeted at children or meant for adults, should be composed in such a manner that will encourage and enkindle noble emotions in their hearts and minds.
