Chariot is said to be car, which is referred in the Puranas to be possessed by the sun, moon and other planets. As per the Vishnu Purana the chariot of sun is said to be nine thousand leagues in length and the pole of twice that longitude. Again, the chariot of moon has three wheels and is drawn by ten white horses. The chariot of Mercury is composed of air and fire and is drawn by eight bay horses. The chariots of Mars and Jupiter are of gold.
Chariot used to be the simplest and easiest way of carriage in earlier times. There are references of different types of chariots in the history. The sandstone of the Vindhya Range has some of the marks of the chariots.
In Morhana Pahar of Mirzapur district, there are two depictions of chariots found. Among them, one chariot shows a team of two horses with the head of a single driver visible.
