Chandan Kumar Bhattacharya

Chandan Kumar Bhattacharya is an Indian writer, poet, composer and mail artist. He was also known as Vattacharja Chandan.

Chandan Kumar Bhattacharya was born in 1944 in Tamluk in West Bengal. Post his school education he came to Kolkata. He graduated from Ashutosh College in B.A. and did his masters in political science from the University of Calcutta. His love of experimentation in art and literature is visible in his literary compositions.

He used to participate in poetry readings at the Saturday open-air MuktaMela fairs at the Kolkata Maidan grounds along with other contemporary poets which taught him how to perform his poetry. He edited a few hand-written magazines. He wanted to start a new literary movement. Therefore along with Dilip Gupta, Ashis Deb and Shukla Mazumder he launched the Prakalpana Movement in Bengali literature with its magazine Swatotsar in 1969.

He framed the word prakalpana and used it as the name of a new type of composition. The first prakalpana book `Porimandal` was published on 6 September 1975. He developed the Sarbangin Poetry Movement or Chetanavyas in the 1970s.

He received an Alpha Beta Honorary Mention Award in 1971 for Byabiloner Shunya Baagaane. His compositions have been published in magazines and online media in India, the US, Italy, Bangladesh and Brazil. In 2000 he was felicitated at the World Bengali Personality Conference at Dhaka. In 2004 he was felicitated by Madhusudan Academy and the Bangladesh Poets Foundation in Sagardanri. His musical poetry album Jug Jug Jio was released in 1999. Through the Prakalpana Movement he has also introduced the concepts of Prakalpana art and Western mail art in India. His magazine Kobisena was quite popular and Prakalpana Sahitya has attracted readers worldwide. He is one of the pioneers in bringing about experiments and ultra-modern literary movement in India

His major works include: Byabiloner Shunnya Bagane, Vaalobashaa ,Posha Paakhi Hobonaa, Swaadhikar Sanad (essay),Porimandal (Prakalpana),Atiprithibi (prakalpana).
