Chadpetar Gan

Chadpetar Gan is a rhythmic type of music that is found in the folk anthologies of present day.

Chadpetar Gan or "roof beating song" is the song of workers. Chadpetar Gan is usually sung in a group. The group comprises of a lead singer and some other male and female singers who repeat the lead singer"s words when their turns come. The main theme of this type of song is "lost love".

History of Chadpetar Gan
Chadpetar Gan, just like the corresponding Sari, as it is known, there are numerous other "work songs" of the rhythmic type. All these songs, as found in folk anthologies of present day, do not seem to be very genuine. But the item Chadpetar Gan has a definite character. This genuinely relates to the song of workers engaged in building construction. It was in Dacca before fifty years or so where it was found in each instance a Muslim mason with his group of small boys engaged in striking the new-soling of the roof of a house with a wooden handle. The man would play the violin and sing a song which would be repeated by his group. Boys used to repeat the song of the master and hammer the roof rhythmically.
