C. J. Thomas was a reputed Malayalam dramatist. Born in 1918 he is noted for the modernist plays Avan vintum varunnu i.e. `Behold! He Comes Again` in 1940, and `A manushyan ni tanne i.e. `You Are That Man` in 1954 were written in a non-realistic style about the Biblical David. This satirizes vulgar sensationalist curiosity and the superficiality of human response to others` sufferings. The latter also overturned conventional illusionist dramaturgy in Malayalam theatre as two characters commented on the core narrative. The Kalari movement, with which Thomas associated himself, successfully premiered the works of C. J. Thomas in the late 1960s. C. J. Thomas died in the year 1960.
