Bura-Buri dance is a folk dance practiced in the West Bengal state of India. Bura-Buri in Bengali means old man and old woman. The dance is quite prevalent in Bengal. Bura-Buri dance represents the long blissful journey of the married life of the aged couple. It also depicts the spirit of work and happiness among the couple.
Performance of Bura-Buri Dance
It is a duet dance where two dancers wear masks of old man and a woman to depict extreme age. The dancers dance in rhythmic harmony along with the accompaniment of songs and beatings of the drum. This dance performance has a humorous touch added to it as it relates the joys and vicissitudes of their long life.
There are other mask dances being performed in Bengal that enjoys the same level of popularity such as the Radha and Lord Krishna series, which depicts the romantic episodes of their life, the Hara-Parvati dance, the Lord Shiva and Shakti dance; the Ganga dance.
