Bikram Kumbhakar was born in the year 1898. He was born in Saraikela, East Singhbhum district. Bikram Kumbhakar initially studied Gotipua dance and acted in Raslila and Ramlila. Later he took training in Pari-khanda-khela i.e. "shield-and-swordplay". The basic martial-arts foundation of Chhau, from Niranjan Kumbhakar, Giridas, and Bichha Babu is most prominent. Subsequently Bikram Kumbhakar, the respected personality of Hindi theatre learnt Chhau at the Prithviraj Singh Deo Akhada and Shiva Kotwal Akhada. His expert treatment of the sword-and-shield dance won him great popularity locally and the attention and patronage of the royal family.
He played the dhol (type of drum) proficiently and also formed a Jatra troupe with Kunja Bihari Bhol, which toured the area. Bikram Kumbhakar actively performed well into his old age, preserving and enriching the form by teaching many students and choreographing new compositions.
This famous Hindi theatre personality named Bikram Kumbhakar died in 1995 at the age of 97.
