Bholanath Das

Bholanath Das is considered among the forerunners of Romantic Movement. He is known to have introduced new technique, form and spirit to Assamese Literature before the Jonaki Era.

Bholanath Das is the harbinger of a new spirit in Assamese though lived till the end of the period of fermentation and hardly participated in the full growth of the new poetry. Blank verse epic is the forte of Bholanath Das (1858-1929). Sita Haran (1888) and collection of poems Kavita-mala are instances of such blank verse epics. Another collection of his poems Chintatarangini was published in 1884. Sita Haran is noted for its peculiar use of terminology and its vigorously sustained movement often the formality of style adding dignity. Some words of alien origin are used that adds to the beauty of this narrative poem which is submerged in the context of a powerful narration.

The new lyric appeared for the first time in Das`s Kavita-mala and Chintatarangini. Megh and Kiwanu Nagage Amar show a drift from tradition. Megh is a nature lyric where the poet reveals how nature could be clothed with beauty and imaginative insight. This poem is noted for its picturesqueness and emotional surge. However his blank verse could not rise above the level of imitation. Sita Haran kavya technically produced a disconnected effect despite the poem having occasional lines of tangent shades reflecting a separate joy.
