Basavaraja Durga Fort

Basavaraja Durga Fort is situated in Honnavar Taluk in the district of Uttara Kannada. It was built by the rulers of the Vijayanagar Empire in 1690.

The island fort is situated in Honnavar Taluk in the district of Uttara Kannada. The structure was built by the rulers of the Vijayanagar Empire in 1690. The fortress can be approached through a boat or ferry. The island is almost 3 km from Sharavati Bay and around 4 km from the port town of Honnavar. The south eastern region of the island has a landing area which leads to the entrance of the ancient fortress. Basavaraja Durga Fort is built at a height of 50 m above sea level and the island covers a total area of 19 hectares.

Basavaraja Durga Island is a plateau and is mostly engulfed in dry grass. There are several fresh water springs in the island. Basavaraja Durga Fort was constructed in 1690. Later Shivappa Nayaka, a Keladi ruler, occupied the fortress and renamed it was Basavaraja Durga Fort in honour of Basavaraj who was a Keladi prince. The defensive structure is strongly fortified in all directions. The fortification is raised by massive blocks of laterite stones. There are also eight mounted guns in the fortress.

There is a temple in the premises of the fort that was established by the native ruler during the 17th century. Presently, the temple is visited by Local boat-owners and fishermen.
