Ananya Chatterjee is a Bengali film actress who is recently known nationally for her National Award-winning role in Abahoman. Ananya Chatterjee has had invariably attained subsequent name and fame owing to her unparallel brilliance in acting. She started her career as a TV actress. She acted in several TV serials and films, including three directed by Anjan Dutta. Her role as a muse of a married director in Abahoman, directed by Rituparno Ghosh won her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
Early life and education of Ananya Chatterjee
Born and brought up in Kolkata, did her schooling from G.D. Birla Centre for Education. Ananya was a student in biology at Jogamaya Devi College, an affiliated undergraduate women`s college of University of Calcutta, in Kolkata.
Career of Ananya Chatterjee
Chatterjee had been one of the disciples of Mamata Shankar`s dance institution; and later started her acting career on television, with TV series, Din Pratidin where she acted opposite Rudranil Ghosh, and went on appear on soaps like Tithir Atithi, Aleya, and Ananya. In spite of having no ceremonial training in acting, her labour was longed-for and accepted and she became a domestic name soon she acted in a handful of telefilms as well, and did three telefilms directed by singer-turned-director Anjan Dutta, John Johnny Janardan, Ek Din Darjeeling and Amar Baba. She has also Anjan Dutt`s Byomkesh Bakshi thriller "Adim Rip". Subsequently she made her feature film debut with Basu Chatterjee`s Tak Jhal Mishti (2002), which she followed up with Sharan Dutta`s thriller Raat Barota Paanch (2005). After appearing in the comedy, Aamra (2006) by Mainak Bhaumik, her next essential film was debutant director Agnidev Chatterjee`s, Probhu Nashto Hoye Jai (Lord, Let the Devil Steal My Soul), which was premiered at the 13th Kolkata Film Festival.
In 2009, appearing opposite veteran Soumitra Chatterjee in Suman Ghosh`s Dwando she managed to stand her ground and then in Anup Sengupta`s Mama Bhagne (2009) where again she her performance was reviewed as "stellar". However it was in Rituparno Ghosh`s Abohoman (2009), released in 2010 that established her as an actress of repute and she also won the National Film Award for Best Actress, her first. Her role in Rituparno Ghosh`s "Abohoman" traces the twists and turns in the relationship between an aging film director and his lead actress.
Chatterjee plays Shikha, a young actress who becomes the love interest of Aniket, a married man with a near-perfect family. In 2012 Bengali film Meghe Dhaka Tara directed by Kamaleswar Mukherjee Chatterjee played the role of Durga.
She performed the lead role in the popular Bengali serial Subarnolata on Zee Bangla channel. Very choosy about her roles, the "thinking actress" says the script of a film is very important to her. "A bad script can make or break a film, however interesting the storyline may be. I had got at least 30 film offers, two of them from Bollywood after getting the National Award in Delhi. But I had turned them down, as the scripts did not at all match my wavelength," she said.
