Akuli was the name of a priest of the Asuras. He along with other priest called Kilata of his class took permission from Manu to sacrifice for him. He too a bull of Manu`s as the first victim into which an Asura slaying voice had entered. It is said that when the bull was slaughtered, the voice departed out of it and entered into Manu`s wife Manavi. It is said that whenever, Manavi spoke out, the Asuras and Rakshasas continued to be destroyed in consequence of her voice.
As per the Asuras she does more mischief to them as the human voice speaks more. Kilata and Akuli said, `Manu is a devout believer let us make trial of him`. It is said that Akuli and Kilata then went to Manu and asked for his permission to sacrifice his wife for him. Manu allowed them to do so. When she was slaughtered the voice departed out of her and entered into the sacrifice and the sacrificial vessels. Akuli and Kilata were unable to drive it out. This is the Asura-slaying voice, which speaks out when the two stones are struck with the `samya` as a part of the ceremonial.
