AH Mohammad Lone

AH Mohammad Lone was a Kashmiri author. Born in 1926, he was influenced by the Progressive movement during his studies in Sri Pratap College, Srinagar. He pioneered various literary forms as vehicles of the revolutionary message. In the forefront of the Jammu and Kashmir Cultural Congress, he wrote one of the famous plays of that period, Viz chheseny i.e. `This Is Our Time`. His play Suya in 1971 won him the Sahitya Akademi award.

This is based on a historical incident in the Rajatarangini. Suya`s ingenuity was in saving a city from floods. Against the backdrop of a remote age this was Avantivarman`s reign in Kashmir. In this the protagonist`s character emerges as a symbol of quest and magnanimity. However, the drama relies on its dialogue, and is difficult to stage. As patron of the Kashmir Theatre Federation, Lone played an important role in rejuvenating Kashmiri theatre in the 1970s. He also scripted over fifty plays for Radio Kashmir, many of which are immensely popular and cherished by people even today. Among them 77 Vyath rozyi pakan i.e. `And Quiet Flows the Vitasta`, Myanyi jigirikyi dadyi vwath i.e. `O My Heart`s Ache, Arise`, and Lalijuv and Sons are notable. He translated several radio and stage plays, including Tagore`s Muktadhara. AH Mohammad Lone died in 1987.
