Abhijeet Gupta is an Indian chess player with the title Grandmaster. He hails from Bhilwara in Rajasthan. He was born on October 16, 1989.
Abhijeet has won many awards for India. He won 19 medals from various parts of the World in Asian and Commonwealth Chess Championships in Sub Junior, Junior and Senior Category. Abhijeet became National Junior (Under-19) Chess Champion at the age of 13 years in 2002. It is a record unsurpassed till 2011. His name was also included in the Limca Book of Records in 2001 as the permanent record holder.
He became an International Master in 2005 and went on to become an International Grand Master in the year 2008. Abhijeet started playing chess at a very young age of 6 and half years. In his very first National Championship he secured the Gold Medal.
All international tournament victories were his outstanding labours. He first achieved the award in international tournaments at the Dubai International open tournament at Dubai in April 2011. This is considered as one of the strongest open of the world. Abhijeet followed it up by winning the National title and then went on to win the Vishakhapatnam International Tournament before ending the year on a high with a brilliant 8/9 first place finish at the London Chess Classic FIDE open.
In the year 2008, Abhijeet won the Parsvnath International open chess tournament in New Delhi and the World Junior Chess championship at Gaziantep in Turkey. Besides this he won the gold in the Commonwealth Junior chess championship. The same year he was also awarded the title of Grandmaster by virtue of his performances in the past. In 2007, Abhijeet won the Commonwealth Junior Chess Championship. After that he also won the silver medal in the Asian Teams Chess Championship-2007. Also he won the Bronze Medals in Commonwealth Chess Championship-2007.
In 2010, he won the Bronze medal in the Asian Chess Championship at Subic Bay in Philippines which also qualified him for the next world championship cycle. He also occupied the first place in the Reykjavik International Open Chess Tournament in Iceland and finished second in the prestigious Corus Chess Tournament (`C` group). In 2009, he again tied the first position in Kavala Open in Greece. After that he won the junior gold in the same event. He also jointly won the 13th Bavarian open at Bad Weisesse in Germany in the same year and tied for the second place in the Subic open tournament in Philippines. In the junior category, Abhijeet was also adjudged the best under-20 in Acropolis 2009 tournament at Greece.
In the last few years Abhijeet has had some tremendous successes. In the year 2012, he won one gold and two silver medals in the Asian Nations Chess Cup that was recently held in China. He then also played in Philadelhia International in USA and the Kavala International in Greece.
In addition, Abhijeet guided his team PSPB to a splendid victory in the National team chess championship by winning the gold medal on board no. 1 with a hundred percent score. It obtained him the gold medal on the top board. He finished second in the Metz International Chess Tournament at Metz in France. The World Chess Cup was another evidence of Abhijeet`s growing skills in chess. He became the only Indian to reach the 3rd round.
