Malai Vedan tribes are quite significant and stand apart amongst other tribal communities of Kerala. These Malai Vedan tribes are one of the scheduled tribes in the whole of the Indian subcontinent. In the whole of the state of Kerala, these Malai Vedan tribes are mainly concentrated in districts like Idukki, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Koliam, Trivandrum etc.
Hunting as well as gathering of forest products and items is the major occupations that these Malai Vedan tribal communities have adopted. Moreover, the Malai Vedan tribes have followed the life style of nomads and kept on migrating from place to place. The Malai Vedan tribal community of Kerala speaks in their local dialect known as Malavadan language. It belongs to the famous Dravidian language family group and many of the Malai Vedan tribes also identify it in different names like Malai Vedan, Malavetan, Towetan, Vedans etc. Dialects like Vetan, Vettuvan etc are widely popular amongst this Malai Vedan tribal community. In the contemporary period, the Malai Vedan tribes can speak in languages like Malayalam and Tamil language also. Like many of the tribal communities of Indian subcontinent, these Malai Vedan tribes also follow practices and rituals of local religion.
