John Victor Peter was born on 19th June 1937. This Indian field hockey player participated at the Olympics tournaments for the year of 1960 and 1964. The 1960 Olympics was held at Rome and the 1964 Olympics held at Tokyo. At the 1960 Olympics India won the silver medal and at the 1964 Olympics India won the gold medal.
In the 1964 Olympics held at Tokyo, India played 9 matches, out of which it won 7 matches, but 2 matches were draw. The Olympic team consisted of Charanjit Singh as captain, Rajendran Christie, Jagjit Singh, Haripal Kaushik, Udham Singh, Darshan Singh, Gurbux Singh, Prithipal Singh, Rajinder Singh, Syed Ali, Mohinder Lal, Dharam Singh, Shankar Lakshman, Joginder Singh, Harbinder Singh, Bandu Patil and John Peter. The Indian national hockey team scored a total of 22 goals. The national team was coached by Habul Mukherjee. India won against Belgium (2-0), Malaysia (3-1), Holland (2-1), Hong Kong (6-0), Canada (3-0), Australia (3-1) and was tied against Spain and Germany. The final match was against Pakistan, where a few Pakistani supporters created havoc by showing aggression against the Indian players. Later the game got back on again. The second half of the match was even more pulsating, where the Indian team won the match securing its seventh gold medal in the Olympics.
John Victor Peter died on 30th June 1998.
