Asrava is the cause which leads to the influx of good and evil Karma. This leads to the bondage of the soul. It refers to the influence of body and mind causing the soul to generate Karma. These karmas are produced by body, mind and speech. Asrava may be described as attraction in the soul toward sense objects.
Activities of Asrava in Jainism
The following are causes of influx of good and evil karma:
•Mithyatva: Ignorance
•Avirati: Lack of self restraint
•Kasaya: Passions like anger, conceit, deceit, and lust
•Pramada: Unawareness or unmindfulness
•Yoga: Activities of mind, speech, and body
In addition to the above causes, the five great sins; violence, untruth, stealing, sensual indulgence, and attachment to worldly objects are also the cause of the influx of karmas.
Types of Asrava
Asrava is of two types, namely, Bhava-Asrava (psychical) and Dravya-Asrava (physical). Bhava is internal impulse resulting from psychic disposition. In other words, modification of consciousness by which karma gets into the soul is known as psychical influx. This leads to actual action which results in Dravya Asrava. Bhava is always more important as without it Dravya cannot come into existence.
