Mohammad Azharuddin joined the Indian National Congress on 19th February 2009. Azhar contested the 2009 General Election, from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. Azharuddin became successful in the elections and represented the Indian National Congress party.

Azharuddin is also known to be maintaining his initiative, the gym called Est, in his hometown, Hyderabad .Mohammad Azharuddin is also engaged in Real Estate and Software business in Dubai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Goa, Delhiand Chennai. Azhar is married to former Bollywood actress Sangeeta Bijlani. His son Ayaz, aged 19 years, died on 16 September 2011.
