Sarsaparilla, also known as "Smilax China" or "China Root", has a medicinal history which dates back to the 16th century. Sarsaparilla was also a treatment for leprosy, gonorrhoea and fever. The use of this drug as a remedy for syphilis was made known to the Portuguese at Goa by Chinese traders.
In the work of Bhavaprakasa, China root is described under its vernacular name of "Chopchini", as a root like Acorus Calamus, brought from a foreign country and useful in rheumatism, epilepsy, insanity and particularly in syphilis. It is used in modern Hindu medicine as an alterative along with Anantamula and other drugs of reputed efficacy in syphilis and rheumatism.
