Gurmeet Singh, Indian AthleteGurmeet Singh is an Indian athlete who competed in the 20 kilometres race walk event. Gurmeet Singh was born on 1st July in the year 1985 in Uttarakhand.

Gurmeet Singh is an Indian athlete who competes in the 20 kilometres race walk event. He is a current Indian record holder in the 20 km race walk, which he set in the Indian Grand Prix I in Patiala in May 2011.

Gurmeet Singh is sponsored by the Mittal Champions Trust, an initiative run by steel business tycoon Lakshmi N. Mittal. Gurmeet Singh is one of the three Indian athletes who have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in 20 km race walk event with an "A" qualification standard timing 1:22:30.

Gurmeet Singh achieved this berth in the 18th Dublin International Grand Prix in Ireland after finishing sixth with a time of 1:22:05. In the event Gurmeet Singh clocked a time of 1:23:34 and finished 33rd.

Gurmeet Singh considers his cousin Sukhbir Singh, who also is a discus thrower, his inspiration for choosing athletics. He won silver in the national junior championships in 2000. Sukhbir Singh finished fifth in the 2001 Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Brunei.

The career of Gurmeet Singh turned around in late 2010, when he started training at Sports Authority of India, Bangalore or (Bengaluru) centre under the coach Ramakrishnan Gandhi.

In March 2012, Gurmeet Singh timed about 1:21:31 at the Asian Championships in Nomi, Japan.

Gurmeet Singh is married to Deepmala Devi, who is also a 20 kilometre walker. She belonged from Indian Railways and made a national record in women"s 20 kilometre walk with a timing of 1:39:30.5hr in the 46th National Open Athletics Championship, held on October 5, 2006. Deepmala Devi broke the three-year-old national record of 1:43:06 hour set by Y Bala Devi in Bengaluru. The meet record of the event stood in the name of Jasmine Kaur with a timing of 1:48:28.80 hr.
