Early Life of Harsimrat Kaur Badal
Harsimrat Kaur Badal was born in Delhi on 25th July 1966 to Satyajit and Sukhmanjus Majithia. Her family is involved in distilleries and aviation business. She did her schooling from Delhi's Loreto Convent School and possesses a diploma degree in Textile Designing from Delhi University. Bikram Singh Majithia who is an MLA from Majitha constituency belonging to Shiromani Akali Dal is her brother. Before joining Indian politics, Harsimrat Kaur Badal worked as a merchandiser in a buying agency.
Political Career of Harsimrat Kaur Badal
Harsimrat Kaur Badal began her political career in the year 2009 with the Indian general election.She contested from the Bathinda constituency and was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha after a victory by 120960 votes. On 3rd December 2009 she delivered her first speech through which she expressed her concern regarding the survivors and victims of the 1984 Sikh riots. She also initiated a project titled 'Nanhi Chhan' which literally refers to innocent lives. This foundation works for women empowerment and the rights of a girl child. In the year 2009 she also became a member of the Committee on Estimates and Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment. In the following year, 2010, she was appointed as a member of Committee on Estimates as well as of Standing Committee on Food and Public Distribution. Currently she serves as the Union Minister for Food Processing in the Government of India. She is also an avid social worker and her contributions in this field include supporting old age homes, running a school for street children in Delhi and sponsoring medical treatment for needy children.
Personal Life of Harsimrat Kaur Badal
Harsimrat Kaur Badal is married to Sukhbir Singh Badal since 21st November 1991. Her husband is also a politician and serves as the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab. The couple is blessed with two daughters and a son. She is the daughter-in-law of Parkash Singh Badal who is the Chief Minister of Punjab. Apart from politics, Harsimrat Kaur Badal is also associated with the business empire of her husband which deals with hotels, media and agriculture. She is also the owner of a jewellery business in the upscale Trident Hotel in Gurgaon.
