Burhar is a town and also a nagar panchayat positioned in the Shahdol district in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. The precise geographical location of the town is at 23.22° North and 81.53° East. It has an average elevation of 482 metres (1581 feet). The town is present near Amarkantak (a hindu holy place) at a distance of about 80 km.
According to the 2001 India census, the town of Burhar has a population of 17,746, with 53% males, 47% females and 14% children less than 6 years of age. The average literacy rate of 69% is higher than the national average of 59.5% including male literacy of 75% and female literacy of 62%.
