The Chavandwadi village is located at the base of the hill fort.
History of Chavand Fort
The fort of Chavand was occupied by Nizam Ahmed, the founder of the Nizam Shahi Dynasty after the decline of the Bahmani Sultanate. Later in 1636, the fortress was captured by the forces of the Mughal dynasty after signing a treaty with the Nizams. Eventually Chavand Fort came under the control of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire. During his reign the hill fort was known as Prasannagad.
Afterwards the army of the British East India Company seized the fortress. The British forces destroyed most of the structure during the siege. Chavand Fort is regarded as one of the Famous Five Forts in the region. The other four fortresses include Naneghat Fort, Jivdhan Fort, Shivneri Fort and Hadsar Fort.
Present Condition of Chavand Fort
Presently the fort of Chavand lies in a state of disrepair. The site is visited by several tourists all around the year.
