An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Lankeshwar Temple is located atop a hillock on the western part of Guwahati in Assam. The temple is situated close to the Guwahati University campus and is amidst a picturesque location.
Devotees visiting the temple need to climb almost 452 marble steps to reach the temple. During the annual festivities of Mahashivaratri, the temple is visited by both tourists and devotees alike.
Legend of Lankeshwar Temple
It is said that Lankeshwar is one of the many forms of Lord Shiva and the devout Shaivite followers considered the temple as one of the most sacred one. According to legend, it is believed that Ravana, the king of Lanka had worshipped Lord Shiva at this spot and hence it is known as Lankeshwar.
