Demography of Thachur According to the Indian census report of 2001 Thachur had a population of 3675. The males constitute 50% and females constitute 50% of the population. The town has an average literacy rate of 54%. It is higher than the national average of 49.5%. The male literacy is 51% and female literacy is 49%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. Kallakurichi is the Taluk headquarters of this village in Thachur. Thachur is surrounded by many villages, namely, Thandalai, Thenkeeranur, Eravar, Porpada kurichi, Somandargudi, Agarakottalam, Kudiraichandal Nallathur, Latchiyam, Vilambar, Indhili, Siruvangur, Vinai Theertha Puram, Olagankathan, Bangaram, Malai kottalam, Kudigadu, Emapper, Neelamangalam and Siruvathur. Economy of Thachur The main source of income for the people here is agriculture. Inhabitants from different places have settled down here and are working as farmers. The main product of the village is milk. Sugarcane is also cultivated here on a large scale. Two major sugar factories have been established here. The town is thus, also known as the 'sugar city.' Educational Institutions of Thachur Thachur has established several scholls and colleges to impart education to the students of the town. Some of the important schools here are Oxalis International School, Govt. Middle School, Bharathiyar International School and Govt. Elemanary School. Besides there are many colleges here like Modern ITI, Jain Engineering College, Shanmuga Arts College, Lakshmi Arts College and Bharathi College. Pilgrimage Centres in Thachur Thachur is an important pilgrimage centre visited by many devotees. Some of the significant temples located here are Amirtha kandeswarar Aalayam dedicated to Lord Shiva, Periyayee Kovil, Veera Payangaram Temple, Amman Temple and Lord Shiva Temple.
