Anant Pai, popularly known as Uncle Pai, is considered as one of the pioneers of Indian Comics. He launched Amar Chitra Katha in 1967, which portrayed illustrated stories of ancient Hindu epics like Ramayana and Mahabarata. His creations included history, fables, folklore, mythology and Indian epics.
Narayan Debnath is the creator of Bengali comics like Handa Bhonda, Nonte Phonte and Batul The Great. His career in comics spans more than 50 years and has greatly contributed to the growth of Bengali comics. Most of his creations are still featured in magazines like Shuktara and Kishor Bharati. His other creations include Potolchand The Magician, Bahadur Beral, Lalu Bhulu, Daanpite Khandu Ar Tar Chemical Dadu etc.
Abid Surti is an author, cartoonist, painter, playwright, journalist, screenwriter and comics creator. In 1952, he created his first characters for the magazine Ramakadu. Surti is also the creator of the famous comic book character, Bahadur. He created more characters like Inspector Vikram, Inspector Azad and Shuja.
Pran Kumar Sharma, popularly known as Pran, created Chacha Chaudhary for Lotpot, a Hindi magazine in 1969. Pran created more characters like Pinki, Shrimatiji, Billoo, Channi Chachi, Raman etc that became very popular and are still published in magazines. Pran was included in People of the Year 1995 by Limca Book of Records for his contribution to Indian Comics.
Mayukh Choudhury is a renowned Bengali writer who has created several comics in Bengali during the early phase of Indian comics. His comics portrayed different stories with detailed illustration for the entertainment of the readers. Choudhury's stories were of varied genre like adventure, action science fiction etc.
Tushar Kanti Chatterjee
Tushar Chatterjee is another famous Indian Comics Creator from Bengal who is considered as one of the pioneer of comics in India. His comics were based on detective and mystery stories and were regularly featured in Shuktara, a Bengali magazine.
R.K. Laxman is a well known Indian cartoonist and illustrator and is believed to be the greatest cartoonist of India. He is most known for his creation of The Common Man.
Rajneesh Kapoor is an Indian contemporary cartoonist whose most popular work called This is Our Life, features as a regular newspaper strip in English.
Sanjay Gupta is an Indian comics creator, writer, editor and the president of Raj Comics. Gupta is most famous for the creation of characters like Doga, Nagraj, Bhokal, Yoddha etc.
Anupam Sinha, along with Sanjay Gupta, has created the famous Raj comics character Super Commando Dhruva. It is inspired from DC Comics superhero Batman.
Dheeraj Verma is an Indian comics creator and illustrator who has worked with Marvel comics, Raj comics and is presently working with Vimanika Comics. He is credited with the creation of Raj comics character Bheriya, in December 1993.
Film director Shekhar Kapur has also made significant contribution to the field of comics with his creation of the fictional character Devi, published by Virgin Comics (Liquid Comics). The character is inspired by the mythological figure Goddess Durga.
Kang is an Indian Comic artist and illustrator credited with the creation of The Sadhu series, along with Gotham Chopra, published by Virgin Comics (Liquid Comics). He has also worked on several other titles under Virgin.
Samit Basu is an Indian author and a writer of comics. He has worked with Virgin Comics in Devi and The Tall Tales of Vishnu Sharma.
Mohapatra is an Indian comics creator and writer who has worked on Devi and The Sadhu: The Silent Ones.
Shamik Dasgupta is an Indian comics creator and writer, mostly famous for his creation of Ramayan 3392 A.D. for Virgin Comics, which is a futuristic version of Ramayana, the ancient Indian epic. He has also written Virulents, a horror graphic novel, for Virgin.
Some of the other renowned Indian comics creators, who are striving hard to change the state of Indian comics are Bharath Murthy, Deepak Sharma, Harsho Mohan Chattoraj etc. Moreover, some of the upcoming talents include Abhinav Saha and Dipayan Chatterjee, who are in plans to launch their graphic novel titled Hara: The Destroyer of Sins.
