The six traits of a King have been briefly described in Garuda Purana. In short it can be said that he never uproots the tree, he is the maker and not the destroyer. The king should impose tax on his subjects however the rate should not be so high that it would reduce them to a pauper. The king will worship Lord Vishnu. He should contribute to the cause cattle and Brahmanas. He should not waste his wealth.
His subjects should be treated by the King as his own children. Wise, fine and faithful priests, ministers, servants, physicians and guards should be chosen by the King else the kingdom would be in ruins. When the King is in bad temper he should be left alone. He must face all situations calmly and he is bound to get through them. A king should never say lies as well as should never treat his servants rudely. Servants are not happy if they are scolded all the time. The six traits that should be there in a King are initiative, bravery, patience, intelligence, strength and valour.
