Parvati Prasad Barua (1904-64) is considered as a symbol of Assamese culture and literature. He is a multi personality. He was a poet, lyricist and dramatist. Popularly he is known as the Geetikavi-the lyrical poet of Assam. He was also one of the early ground-breaking movie makers of Assamese cinema. His compositions are in a fluid style which appeals to all. The content of his poems was picked up from rural canvas of the state of Assam.
The themes of his poems included rivers, tiny boats, Hills and hillocks, rivulets, forests and grasslands, flora and fauna, summer sky or the calm serene sky of autumn. Growing up in the midst of nature his love for Assam is evident in most of his compositions. His compositions include: Bhonga Tukarir Sur, Gungunani, Luiti, Sukula Dawor Oi Kohuwa Phul; including Sarodi Sandhiyar Jonaki Mel, Lakhhim and Sonar Seleng. His poetry has been translated into Hindi, English and may other Indian languages.
