The Shivpuri district in the Madhya Pradesh state was once the summer capital of the Scindia clan of Gwalior State and earlier, its dense forests were the hunting grounds of Mughal emperors when Emperor Akbar captured great herds of elephants . Later, it was the tigers which roamed the wooded hills and many a magnificent beasts were `bagged` by royal Shikaris. Today, the district possesses a sanctuary for rare wildlife and avifauna. Its royal past has thus been transformed into a vibrant, hopeful present. There are numerous palaces and lakes in the district, which reminds of the splendor Shivpuri witnessed during the rein of the Scindias.

One of the major attractions of this district of Madhya Pradesh state is the Madhav National Park. This national park is situated between Agra-Bombay road and Jhansi-Shivpuri Road. The Madhav National Park spreads over an area of 157.58 square kilometers. Here people can see a large number of Indian gazelle, chinkara and chital. Other animals found in this park include sambar, nilgai, chausingha, blackbuck, leopard, sloth bear and the common langur. The national park is also rich in bird life. The artificial lake known as Chandpata is the winter abode of migratory geese, pintail, pochard, teal, gadwall and mallard. Other residents include the cormorant, paradise flycatcher, laggar falcon and golden oriole. This park is an oasis in the midst of cultivation and habitation.

Tourism in Shivpuri District, Tamil Nadu The Tiger Safari is another place of interest in the district of Shivpuri. Pair of tigers from Bhopal Van Vihar, each about three years old was introduced in the Madhav National Park in fenced one hundred and forty hectare well preserved pocket, in the month of October 1989. The names of the tigers are Tara and Petu. All the cubs of first litter died soon after birth and in the second litter of one male and two females in August 1991 fared well. Now, the total number of tigers in the safari is twelve. The Safari provides a good opportunity to visitors to observe the tigers at close range. The district of Shivpuri is famous for graceful and intricately embellished marble chhatries or cenotaphs constructed by Scindia princes. Set in an elaborate Mughal Garden, are the cenotaphs, the royal Chhatries dedicated to the Scindias. Facing each other across a water tank are the Chhatries of Madhav Rao Scindia and dowager queen Maharani Sakhya Raje Scindia, in a delightful fusion of Islamic and Hindu architectural styles, with their shikhara - type spires and Rajput and Mughal pavilions.

Madhav Vilas Palace is the summer palace of the Scindias. It looks intensely alluring, dressed in soft shade of rose-pink. The Mahal as it is famously known is attired with marble floors, elegant terraces and a Ganapati Mandap. From the turrets, one can get a beautiful view of Shivpuri town and Madhav National Park itself. This grand palace has now been converted into the training center of Intelligence Bureau of Government of India, which is among the few training centers of Intelligence Bureau.

Tourism in Shivpuri District, Tamil Nadu Deep inside the Madhav National Park, at its highest point stands the George Castle constructed by Jiwaji Rao Scindia. The convenient time to visit the castle is at sunset, when Sakhya Sagar Lake seems to take the radiance and changing hues of the sky. The castle situated at the central region of the Park offers a delightful panoramic view of Sakhya Sagar and the spread of the forest around. The grand George Castle was erected by the Gwalior royalty for an overnight halt for tiger shooting by British King George V, while he was to pass that way during his visit to India in the year 1911. It so happened, that the King could shoot a tiger on the way itself and did not stop at Madhav National Park.

Sakhya Lake and Boat Club is one of the most favourable tourist attractions in the district of Shivpuri. Sakhya Sagar and Madhav Sagar, created on Manier River in the year 1918, are two important bio-diversity support systems in the Park besides several perennial and seasonal streams. Marsh crocodile, Indian python and monitor lizard are some known occupants of the reptile hideout at the few yards of entrance of Madhav National Park. On the shores of the Sakhya lake and connected to it by a broad pier is a boat club, an airy and delicate structure with glass panels. The boat club is also known as Sailing Club. Just stands by the railing of Sailing Club deck extending in to Sakhya Sagar and watch. The view of massive lake all around and the undulating, forested Vindhyachal hills beyond is mesmerizing. Boating is currently banned in the lake keeping in mind the safety of lives of tourists.

Tourism in Shivpuri District, Tamil Nadu Narwar Fort is forty one kilometres from Shivpuri. It is a remarkable fortress atop a hill constructed by the Kuchhwaha Rajputs. The famous king Raja Man Singh and his beautiful wife Mragnayani made a historic event. Mragnayani was also known as Gujri Rani. Another major attraction in this district is the Tatya Tope Memorial. Tatya Tope was the great freedom fighter of Indian National Movement who was active in this region in his lifetime. The British arrested him and the court case was heard here on the 14th of April 1854 and he was sentenced to death at this place. His grand statue attracts the tourist for the important role he played and recalls his contribution towards a modern India. Survaya Ki Garhi is twenty kilometers from Shivpuri on Shivpuri-Jhansi Road. There is an old temple of Lord Shiva and a beautiful water source. The Garhi has a big auditorium of stone. It is a famous historical place of old times which has its charm due to its old structure.

The district museum has a large collection of archeological statues of old time, which were found during the excavation in Shivpuri and nearby places. The beautiful works of old times proved that this region was the main activity point of Jain culture. The big human size statues vary of many god and goddess in various postures. Some of the famous maths of old times in this district located sixty five kilometers away from Shivpuri forms the major attractions of the place.

Nature Tourism in Shivpuri District
Bhoora Khon is a small but beautiful waterfall with the deities of Lord Shiva. The park and boat club adds the glory. Earlier, this was the spot joining the Sailing Club of National Park. During the time of the British, the viewers used to enjoy the boat sailors and the view of Madhav Sagar Lake. The water fall from a height of more than twenty five meters and offers a nourishing experience to the swimmers with jump into the deep kund. Another one is the Sultangarh Falls which is a very beautiful picnic spot in the rainy season. The heavy waterfall in rainy season gives immense pleasure and the greenery around add to the charm of nature. This natural fall of the Parvati River falling from a hill from a height is fifty kilometers from Shivpuri. There is still another major attraction called the Pawa Water Falls which is present in the district of Shivpuri. It is a beautiful waterfall in Pohri, which is forty kilometers to Shivpuri. There is a grand statue of Lord Shiva at this place. The Pawa Kund is five hundred feet deep on the Pawa River.

Apart from the various temples, palaces, national parks, lakes, picnic spots, water falls, etc, there are various other attractions in this district of Madhya Pradesh state which forms the major pullers of tourists throughout the year. One of the most famous tourist attractions is Mohini Pik up Wear. This is a very beautiful picnic spot and it is situated at a distance of about fifty kilometers from Shivpuri on the way to Narwar. The beautiful sightseeing from the top of the height gives a rare look, with the water flowing and dam site. The glass house is a valuable and great spot to enjoy in the rainy season.
