 The prime body for performing arts in India, Sangeet Natak Akademi incepted the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 1954. The objective behind incepting this award was to recognise extraordinary talents in various fields of performing arts in India and also to appreciate their achievements. The award is presented in the categories like Hindustani Music (Vocal and Instrumental), Carnatic Music (Vocal and Instrumental), Dance, Theatre, etc. Apart from these, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Films is also another principal category of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. This award is also given to the successful people from various divisions of films in India. The people involved in different aspects of films like acting, direction, lyric composition, music direction, screenplay, etc. have received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Films in different occasions. The famous actor, Durga Khote won the award for the first time in 1958 and since then, many other personalities have received it for making outstanding contributions.
