Considered as one of the most prestigious and honourable civilian awards in India; the Padma Bhushan Award was incepted in the year 1954. The award is ranked third amongst all the civilian awards presented by the Government of India, after the Bharat Ratna Award and Padma Vibhushan Award. The Government presents the award to the extremely talented people from different fields including Science & Engineering, Literature & Education, Medicine, Sports, Civil Service, Arts, Trade & Industry, Social Work, Public Affairs, etc. The Government actually recognises their talents and appreciates their achievements through this award. The people from India and abroad can get the award. A total of 14 people received the Padma Bhushan Award in the year 1999.
