It was specially built with an idea for the Muslim minorities of Hyderabad and become the first medical college in the former undivided state of Andhra Pradesh. It follows the syllabus prescribed by the University for the MBBS course as recognized by the Medical Council of India. The rules, regulation or orders that the management of the college observes apply to the minority institution without violating the rights conferred under Article 30(1) of the constitution of India.
Management of the Deccan College of Medical Science
The Deccan College of Medical Science was administered and established by the Muslim Minority Trust also known as “Dar-us-Salem Educational Trust” under the purveying of Article 30(1) of the Indian Constitution. The educational trust is autonomous in nature. Asaduddin Owaisi is the chairman of the trust and Akbaruddin Owaisi is the Managing Director. The administration of the college is taken care of by the chief administrator Colonel G.K.N Prasad.
Architecture of the Deccan College of Medical Science
The college is located at the Nawab Lutf ud Daula Palace, Zafargarh, Kanchanbagh nearby Santoshnagar. There is a seven-story hospital attached to the college which is known as the Owaisi Hospital and Recharge Centre. Apart from that, there is also another hospital known as the Princess Esra Hospital. The campus covers an area of about 66,070 sq ft, built in the area along with an adjacent open air space of approximately 16 acres available for further expansion. The campus has facilities of a Cricket Ground; an indoor sports complex and basketball court. It has a central library with additional department libraries. It consists of over 30,000 reference books and textbooks and 130 journal subscriptions as of 2018.
Course offered in the Deccan College of Medical Science
It offers a graduation degree in M.B.B.S or Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. It has post-graduate degrees in Doctor of Medicine (M.D) in subjects such as Physiology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, General Medicine, Paediatrics, Pulmonology, Anaesthesia, Radiology, Microbiology, Dermatology and Psychiatry.
The postgraduate degree in Master of Surgery (M.S) is available in subjects such as Anatomy, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Opthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology.
Along with those, it also has the facility of postgraduate diploma courses in variant subjects such as Diploma in Gynaecology and Obstetrics (D.G.O), Diploma in Anaesthesiology (D.A), Diploma in Orthopedics (D.Ortho.), Diploma in Ophthalmology (D.O), Degree in Laryngo-Otology (D.L.O), Diploma in Medical Radiodiagnosis (D.M.R.D), Diploma in Dermatology and Venereal Diseases (D.D.V.L), Diploma in Psychiatric Medicine (D.P.M) and Diploma in Child Health (D.C.H). It has few super-specialty degrees of Cardiology (D.M), Neurology (D.M), Urology (M.Ch) and Plastic Surgery (M. Ch.).
The Department of Physiology of DCMS is doing studies on PULSE and the Department of Gastroenterology is running a project on Liver Cell Transplantation that is a unique type of research work in the whole world. The college also has an alumni association for the students.
Owaisi Hospital and Research Centre
Attached to the college is the hospital Owaisi Hospital and Research center for researching Reproductive Technology. The hospital possesses state of the art equipment necessary for all major surgeries and treatment especially in gastroenterology, cardiology, neonatology, orthopedics and emergency medicine.
Other initiatives of Deccan College of Medical Science
A training program for the I.P.S. probationers from the National Police academy is being conducted in the Department of Forensic Medicine in DCMS. Apart from the research works, Deccan College of Medical Sciences (DCMS), Hyderabad has also conducted several conferences and workshops in Pharmacology and Biochemistry.
