In the epic Ramayana it is mentioned that Saushkala is a messenger of Ravana, the Rakshasa chief. Saushkala was sent by Ravana to demand Sita in marriage for his master. But Saushkala refused on his part to submit to the test of bending Lord Shiva's bow. Then Lord Rama breaks the arrow of Shiva and marries Sita. Saushkala waited until Rama had won Sita and at last departed being extremely resentful. Offended Saushkala conveyed this information to his master Ravana.
