In the Vishnu Purana it is mentioned that there are eight branches of medical science. One of them is Salaka, this branch of medical science is used for the treatment of external organic affections. Salaka consist of two constitute surgery.
The other branches of medical science are Salya, Chikitsa, Bhutavidya, Kaumarabhritya, Agada, Rasayana and Bajikarana.
