Rhea Pillai was born to the financial controller of IBM Europe - Raymond Pillai. Her mother, Durreshwar Dhanrajgir was a doctor and maternal grandfather was Raja Dhanrajgir of Hyderabad. Rhea Pillai has an older sister Nina and she is also the cousin of director - producer Tarun Dhanrajgir.
Rhea Pillai's parents divorced when she was only three years and she lived with her grandmother, who is the renowned actress Zubeida, who starred in Aalam Aara. Rhea Pillai was a student of St Hilda's boarding school in Ooty, Tamil Nadu and studied economics at St Xavier's College in Mumbai. Here, she was chosen as Society magazine's face of the year.
