Kakshas is one of the eight parts of Zodiacs which is needed in Asthakavargas. The Asthakavargas is an exclusive way of dividing each of the twelve rasis or zodiac signs into eight sub divisions, based on the influence of the `lagna` or time and the seven main planets on these twelve rasis. Asthakavargas is followed by many astrologers as according to them it makes the process of prediction a lot simpler.
For the purpose of Asthakavargas, each rasi is divided into eight parts called "Kakshas". Each kaksha has a span of 3:45`. The first kaksha of each rasi is ruled by Saturn, the second is controlled by Jupiter, the third is by Mars, the fourth rasi by sun, fifth by Venus, sixth by mercury, the seventh rasi by moon and the last rasi is ruled by the lagna. There are three types of Ashtakavarga charts which are used to study the effects of the planets.
The first type is the Bhinnashtakavarga chart which is prepared for the lagna and the 7 planets. The second type is Sarvasthakavarga chart which is the combined detailed summary of how many positive points each of the 7 planets and lagna are contributing in all the rasis. The third type is the Samudaya Ashtakarva chart which gives a brief at a glance idea of how many total good points are there in each house.
