Kaikesi, also known as Nikasha and Keshini, was the mother of Ravana
. She was one of the daughters of Sumali and Ketumati
, the Rakshasas. She was married to Muni Visravas.
Sumali with his family lived for a long time in Patala
, the Naraka
. He once visited the earth and wanted his daughter Kaikasi to entice Visravas. So, Kaikasi schemed with her parents to seduce Rishi Vishrava to produce a powerful, demonic offspring. Vishrava left his wife Ilavida and his son Kubera to marry Kaikesi, and through her he fathered Ravana, Vibhishana
and a daughter, Shurpanakha. When Ravana abducted Sita
, she ordered Ravana to return Sita to her husband Rama
, but he disobeyed her orders. Ravana threw Vibhishana out of Lanka
as he opposed Ravana for abducting Sita. Kaikasi had ordered him to go and fight on Rama's side.
