Kaikesi, also known as Nikasha and Keshini, was the mother of
Ravana in
Hinduism. She was one of the daughters of Sumali and
Ketumati, the Rakshasas. She was married to Muni Visravas.
Sumali with his family lived for a long time in
Patala, the
Naraka. He once visited the earth and wanted his daughter Kaikasi to entice Visravas. So, Kaikasi schemed with her parents to seduce Rishi Vishrava to produce a powerful, demonic offspring. Vishrava left his wife Ilavida and his son Kubera to marry Kaikesi, and through her he fathered Ravana,
Vibhishana,
Kumbhakarna and a daughter, Shurpanakha. When Ravana abducted
Sita, she ordered Ravana to return Sita to her husband
Rama, but he disobeyed her orders. Ravana threw Vibhishana out of
Lanka as he opposed Ravana for abducting Sita. Kaikasi had ordered him to go and fight on Rama's side.
