Jimala is the name of an infamous thief mention in the Hindu legends. A story relating to the life of Jimala says that as he was one day surprised by a tiger, and in his fright cried out the words 'Hari! Hari'. The god immediately sent help, and relieved Jimala from his danger. Jimala, the notorious thief was so grateful for the divine interposition that he erected a shrine or a temple on the spot, and became an ascetic.
