K. L. Krishnan Kutty Pulavar is well renowned in the field of Tolpavakuttu. K. L. Krishnan Kutty Pulavar was born in Palakkad district, Kerala, to a family in which six generations had been traditional practitioners of shadow puppetry. His father, Lakshman Pulavar, taught him the technique. Since 1935, K. L. Krishnan Kutty Pulavar presented it at rituals in the Bhagavati temples of north Kerala. Even though it was beset by problems of vanishing patronage, K. L. Krishnan Kutty Pulavar continued to perform as one of the last in this threatened genre.
