Mohammad Hasan was born in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, in 1926. He studied at Lucknow University from where he earned a doctoral degree in Urdu literature. He taught at the Lucknow, Aligarh Muslim, Delhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru University. Hasan wrote over a dozen plays on social and historical subjects, staged by amateur Urdu theatre groups in different parts of the country. His drama is marked by an emphasis on socio-political implications and literary sophistication. Zahaq in 1975 is perhaps the most interesting. Based on a tale from Firdausi's Shahnama, it had a parabolic significance in the political climate of the mid-1970s.
