Seema Biswas is an Assamese star born on 14th January 1965 in Guwahati
. Her parents are Jagdish and Meera Biswas. Her mother was always her influence, she was a history teacher and a pioneering figure for female theatre artistes in Assam and consequently Seema came into contact with artists like Bhupen Hazarika, Phani Sarma and Bishnuprasad Rabha early in life. The Bollywood actress Seema Biswas studied Political Science at Nalbari College, and later joined the National School of Drama at New Delhi. After completing her studies at NSD in 1984, she joined the NSD Repertory Company.
Seema Biswas' Film Career
Shekhar Kapur watched her performance in Khubsurat Bahu. This was a play produced by NSD Repertory Company, and subsequently the director offered her a role in Bandit Queen. Although she had earlier acted in Assamese cinema this was her first big break into Hindi cinema. Seema Biswas shot into prominence with the role of Phoolan Devi in Shekhar Kapur's film Bandit Queen in the year 1994.
Seema Biswas hates stereotypical roles. She always liked challenges and has worked in a variety of films and character roles. She has also worked in a number of Malayalam and Tamil Films. She loves her roles and always wants to reveal the true essence of the character amidst her performance. She always believes in being authentic with her roles.
As in case of 'Bandit Queen' she practiced smoking whereas for Kahmoshi, learned sign language, and for the small role in 'Pinjar', she met mentally challenged people. The Malayalam films with Jayraj, Shantam and Vivats, have won her awards and reviews also. Her latest role in Ek Hasina Thi, was really sensitive and all these masterworks took her to be a star. She is always happy with her roles like in Boom she was a housekeeper and enjoyed her role though it was a small one. The actress has carved her own niche in an industry that clamours for stars with glamorous looks.
Awards and Honours to Seema Biswas
Biswas won the 1996 National Film Award "silver lotus award' for best actress for her role in the film in Bandit Queen. This film also bagged her Filmfare best debut actress award in 1996. In the same year she won Star Screen best supporting actress for Khamoshi: The Musical. In the year 2001 she won Sangeet Natak Academi Award while in the year 2006 she won best performance by an actress in a leading role as Shakuntala in Deepa Mehta's Water. She has a reputation for performing strong character roles. She was also nominated two times as best supporting actress for Company and Bhoot in the year 2002 and 2003 respectively. She has been honoured with the Life Membership of International Film and Television Club of Asian Academy of Film & Television by the Director Sandeep Marwah.
