![]() Vani Jayaram has received formal classical training in singing under Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan. She is a qualitative singer whose versatility ranges withing a large scope of music. Her rendarings ranges from classical songs in Carnatic and Hindustani styles, ghazals, light and pop songs and some very popular folk songs as well. This child prodigy first executed for All India Radio, Madras, at the age of eight. Since her childhood, she always possessed an yearning for the career in film playback singing. After her marriage to Jairam when they moved to Mumbai, it seemed as if her dream came true. It was the year 1970, when the veteran hindi film music director, Vasant Desai selected her to sing for the hindi feature film Guddi. Three songs has been recorded on her voice. Her song from the film, 'Bol Re Papi Hara,' was completely based on the hindustani raga Miyan Malhar. This song made her identity a household name in the different corners of India. After executing this song she has been conferred many accolades like, Tansen Samman (for best classical-based song in a hindi film,) The Lions International Best Promising Singer, The All India Cinegoers Association, and the All India Film-goers Association awards for the Best Playback Singer in the year 1971. ![]() Vani Jayaram has also sang in the Pt. Ravi Shankar scored film Meera, which brought her the Film World (1979) Cine Herald (1979) and Filmfare (1980) awards for Best Playback Singer in Hindi. Vani Jayaram has won her second National Award as Best Playback Singer of the year 1980 for the film Shankarabharanam (Telugu). The music of that film was scored by K.V. Mahadevan. She won her third National Award for Best Playback Singer of the year 1991 again for K.V. Mahadevan's Swati Kiranam. She has also bagged the honor to be the youngest artiste to be awarded the Sangeet Peet Samman.
