Thalipith is a wonderful snack recipe from Maharashtra cuisine. It is a multi-grain mildly spiced pancake ideal for breakfast as well as lunch. It is made in various ways and one can choose different types of flours according to choice. Thalipith is easy to make and can be prepared at home.
Ingredients of Thalipith
1 cup whole wheat flour (atta)
1 cup bajra flour
half cup rice flour
half cup besan
half tsp chilly powder
half tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp dhania powder
Oil as required
Salt to taste
Method of Preparing Thalipith
Mix the flours and roast lightly in a pan or a griddle.
Add chilly powder, salt, turmeric powder, dhania powder and jeera powder.
Knead with water to make firm dough.
Roll into thin rotis and cook over a tawa (griddle), smearing oil on both sides, till crisp.
Serve hot.
Another method of preparing Thalipith is as follows:
Ingredients of Thalipith
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup rice flour
1/2 cup jawar flour
1/2 cup gram flour
2 tsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp carom seeds
2 tbsp sesame seeds
3/4 cup thick poha
1" piece of ginger
4 green chillies
1 tsp garam masala
1 cup finely chopped coriander leaves
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
Method of Preparing Thalipith
In a mixing bowl, add whole wheat flour, jawar flour, besan, rice flour, and soaked poha.
Add coriander powder, garam masala, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, ajwayan, ginger and green chilli paste, salt, onion, and finely chopped corianders leaves and mix well.
Start to add water and knead it into stiff dough. Keep it aside for 15 mts.
Take rolling board, cover that place with aluminium foil, sprinkle handful of water over foil.
Take small ball from thalipeeth dough and flatten it to make bread.
Poke a whole at the centre of thalipeeth, sprinkle sesame seeds.
Add 1/2 tsp oil over hot skillet.
Place thalipeeth, gently place the edges and separate foil from thalipeeth.
Cover and cook until gets golden spots.
Flip and let it cook for other 3 to 4 mts.
Serve hot.
This delicious dish can be teamed up with home made ghee, pickle, raita or plane yogurt. It is also an ideal food item to savour during an evening conversation with family, friends or guests.
