A well known personality in the Marathi film industry as well as Bollywood, Ashok Saraf is famous for his impeccable comic timing. His kind of comedy has been followed by many actors and provides a standard for new forthcoming comic actors in Marathi cinema.
Early Life of Ashok Saraf
Ashok Saraf was born in erstwhile Bombay in the state of Maharashtra on 4th June, 1947. He is from Belgaum and spent his childhood at Chikhalwadi in south Mumbai. Ashok completed his schooling from DGT Vidyalay Mumbai.
Career of Ashok Saraf
Acting in over 200 Marathi films and several other Marathi plays, television serials and Hindi films and serials, Ashok Saraf has established himself not only in films but also in television. He has essayed a variety of character portrayals in many memorable Marathi films, the most memorable being ‘Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi’ and ‘Pandu Hawaldar’. In the Marathi film industry, he is popularly known as ‘Mama’, which means maternal uncle.
He plays all his roles with equal ease and also formed an unbeatable pair with Laxmikant Berde. From the year 1985 onwards, this dynamic duo along with Sachin Pilgaonkar and Mahesh Kothare created the ‘comedy film wave’, which lasted for almost a decade.
In the Indian television industry also Ashok Saraf has made his mark by starring in famous Hindi serials 'Yeh Chhoti Badi Baatein' and 'Hum Paanch'. Saraf also played important roles in Bollywood. Some of these roles which are remembered are from films like Singham (2011), Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya (1998), Gupt (1997), Koyla (1997), Yes Boss (1997) and Karan Arjun (1995).
