Gummidipoondi is an industrial town in Tiruvallur district of the southern state of India, Tamil Nadu. Chennai, the state capital is located in the north at a distance of 45 km. of Gummidipoondi. It lies on the NH 5 from Chennai to Calcutta. The nearest airport is at Chennai and the nearest railway station is the Gummidipoondi Railway Station on the Chennai -Ongole rail route. The major industries in the town are Dupont Fibres and Hitech Carbon.
The 2001 India census report states that Gummidipoondi had a population of 16,116. Males and females constitute 52% and 48% of the population respectively. In Gummidipoondi, 13% of the population is less than six years of age. As far as literacy rate of Gummidipoondi is concerned it is 70%. It is higher than the national average literacy rate, which is 59.5%. Out of it, the male literacy rate is 77% and the female literacy rate is 63%.
The Pulicat Lake is a major tourist destination in the vicinity.
